Test equipment must be designedto protect people who work inthe high-voltage, high-currentenvironment. In order to preventinjury the InternationalElectrotechnical Commission(IEC) develops internationalgeneral standards for safety ofelectrical equipment for measure-ment, control and laboratory use.The most current standard 61010specifies overvoltage categoriesfor electrical distributionsystems. The Category ratingincreases based on the closenessto the power source and a higherlevel of user protection isrequired from test equipment.
